    Canada Day1:

一切顺利,我的兴致也很高,check-in以后就在duty-free shops小逛一下,买了本Economist, The World in 2007.

那慈眉善目的大叔居然还威胁我,"there are only two size-40 left! If you come back tomorrow, you may get one that reaches your ankle!" "Good! I can wear it as pajamas." "You can do that, except that it's not very comfortable."

    September 23

    travel highlights 1: France

当他问我来自哪个城市时,我回答“青岛”,打算当他露出“那是哪里”的表情后就说"Tsing Tao Beer" 或者 "somewhere in between Beijing and Shanghai", 这是我的标准答案。 看着其他几个人一脸费解的表情,我解释道,"yes, it used to be a German colony". 事后Anasuya告诉我们,每次来探望,Mr Handke总会给她看自己些的文章,"...and they were interesting. I enjoyed reading them."

Parlez-vous Anglais? (Do you speak English?) |||

我如释重负,接着问道,"where is the toilet?"

    June 07

    We're going mixed!

Today, 7th June 2006,  2 days before the World Cup, will be recorded in the history of St Hilda's College, even that of Oxford University. As the last women's college made the decision to become coed, "single-sex college" will officially become a word in Oxford's history in 2009.

It's a shame that I won't be able to participate in St Hilda's new era with both wowen and men. Nevertheless I'm lucky to witness the decision making process, to listen to contrasting opinions, and to feel the vibrance (or turbulence?) in the transition period.

The following is the email sent by Lady English, the principal, informing members of the college about the decision made by the Governing Body:

Today marks an important stage in the life of St Hilda's that opens up
new and exciting opportunities for the College.  The Governing Body
voted this afternoon to change the Statutes to admit men to the
Fellowship and to change the Charter to admit men to the student body.

The College will now proceed with the formal process of changing the
Statutes and Charter which is expected to take about six months.  We
plan to open Fellowship appointments to both men and women as soon as
the legal process permits.  However the admission of men as students
will be deferred to a date to be agreed in consultation with the JCR and
MCR.  A delay of two years has been proposed by Governing Body.

We shall aim to provide the best College environment for women, within a
mixed community, and re-focus our efforts to work for the advancement of
women across the University as a whole.

The College will still be an open friendly and diverse academic
community.  For those women who prefer to live in an all female
residence, we plan to reserve all or part of a building on the main site
and one or two graduate houses, for women only for the long term.

As we move forward in this new direction we shall involve present
students and staff in planning the changes.  This will be an exciting
time for all of us and I look forward to working with you on the transition.

    gloomy outlook

    1 July

    The Da Vinci Code

Here is the one actor having fun with his role and playing a character rather than a piece to a puzzle.

    Rhinos in Love

    Thaksin's long goodbye

    BBC NEWS
    Thaksin's long goodbye
    By Kate McGeown
    BBC News, Bangkok

It is not often that a prime minister announces he has won an election one day, then steps down the next.

But nothing has been straightforward about Thailand's recent poll, nor about the man behind it, the controversial self-made billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra.

And even though he has now announced that he is stepping aside, there are still far more questions than answers about what will happen next.

For a start, many analysts doubt that Mr Thaksin has really left centre stage at all.

"He will still remain party leader, and he will obviously have a huge influence on the next person to become prime minister," said Chaiwat Khamchoo, a political scientist at Chulalungkorn University.

"I would not be surprised if Thaksin found himself an important position in the new parliament," added analyst Thitinan Pongsudhirak. "He's still a force to be reckoned with."

Even some of Mr Thaksin's detractors have only given the news of his exit a cautious welcome.

"He's trying to dictate the terms of his departure," Korn Chatikavanij, a spokesman for the main opposition Democrat Party, told reporters on Wednesday.

But there is no doubt that Mr Thaksin's announcement has certainly changed the stakes.

For one thing, the demonstrators who have spent the past few months holding rallies accusing the prime minister of corruption and demanding his resignation are now packing up to go home.

"We should be satisfied at the moment, even though it isn't exactly all we want," said a key protest organiser, Chamlong Srimuang.

    Future unclear

The embattled prime minister called last weekend's snap elections to show that he was still supported by the majority of the country, despite the regular rallies against him.

But the move backfired when the three main opposition groups decided to boycott the poll, claiming it was not legitimate.

Although his party, Thai Rak Thai, won a majority of the votes, the high number of protest "no" votes failed to give Mr Thaksin the convincing mandate he needed, and undoubtedly played a large part in convincing him to step down as prime minister.

But whatever Mr Thaksin's role in the future, there are several other questions that have yet to be resolved - not least the problem of how Thai Rak Thai can form a government.

The party cannot form a legal government, because the law requires all 500 seats to be filled in order for parliament to convene, and these bizarre one-horse race elections have ended with nearly 40 vacant seats.

The election commission has said that by-elections will be held in a few weeks, but there is no guarantee that the candidates will get in a second time round, or even a third, prompting the question of what happens when the 30-day deadline for forming a government expires.

"There's just no provision in the constitution for what happens next," said Mr Chaiwat.

"We'll just have to wait and see," he said, adding that the ruling party might have to find a way to change the constitution to solve the problem.

    Opposition sidelined

There is yet another dilemma facing Thai politicians.

Because just one major party took part in the election, just one party will form the vast majority of the new government - a situation almost unheard of in a democratic country.

The opposition Democrats took a huge risk when they decided to boycott the elections, because although they managed to push their arch-rival into stepping down, they will now have to watch Thai politics from the sidelines.

"I don't think the Democrats will be able to do very much during this new government term," said Mr Thitinan, "so there will be few checks and balances limiting Thai Rak Thai."

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva denied this would be too much of a problem, saying that by boycotting the elections, the party had already proved it could force political reform outside the parliamentary agenda.

Analysts predict that this strange new one-party government will not last more than a year - and that its sole function will be to redraft the constitution to ensure the current political quagmire is not repeated.

While this will paralyse many parts of Thai politics in the medium term, the opposition believes this is a sacrifice worth making.

"It's like the system has been invaded by some kind of a disease," said Mr Abhisit. "It might hurt in the short term, but it's necessary for the health of the country's democracy."

    'Learning process'

This is an unprecedented time in Thai politics, where little is clear and the outlook seems to change on an almost daily basis.

But at least there is one silver lining to this continuing saga. In the past few weeks, the Thai public was becoming increasingly concerned that the standoff between Mr Thaksin's supporters and detractors would end in violence, as has happened many times in Thai history.

With Mr Thaksin's departure, this danger has been averted.

"I think this has been a great learning process for Thai politics," said analyst Chris Baker.

"The country has come out to have its say in the election, and the city has come out on the streets. Both have had their say, and they have done it without bloodshed," he said.

"There may be problems ahead, but this is truly a democracy."

    THAKSIN'S POLITICAL CRISIS
23 January : Thaksin family sells 49.6% stake in telecoms firm Shin Corp
4 February : 50,000 attend rally in Bangkok demanding Thaksin's resignation; similar rallies continue in the capital
24 February : Thaksin dissolves parliament and calls snap election
27 February : Three main opposition parties say they will boycott the poll
2 April : Thais vote for new government amid opposition boycott
3 April : Thaksin says his Thai Rak Thai party has won more than 50% of vote
4 April : Thaksin says he will step down

Thaksin is one of the current political figures that I hold high regard for. His CEO style of governing the country allowed Thailand's economy to prosper on the ruin of the Asian financial crisis. Economists love to contrast Thailand with Indonesia, who accepted the assistance from IMF after the crisis and got hurt rather badly by the strong contractionary policies, praising Thaksin for his wisdom in economic policy-making.

Thaksin's leaving of office will definitely have profound repercussion on Thailand's economy and political scene. Any further economic reform will have to be postponed. The new government will not be able to do much apart from sorting out the mess in constitution and the relation with the Democrats, whose claim about forcing "political reform outside the parliamentary agenda" only implies more troubles in the near future.

With the gloomy outlook in mind, I find it ironic to claim the whole event a victory of "true democracy". Maybe it is the case as the Democrat leader claimed, "It's like the system has been invaded by some kind of a disease. It might hurt in the short term, but it's necessary for the health of the country's democracy." However, whether the pain is worth the while for an ordinary Thai citizen, I am in no position to make the judgement.

    5th album THANKS

    Rock

Yue比较喜欢影法師peach应该也是吧(though it's for a different reason...)。

    frustrated

at the beginning of Trinity term

    i never evaporated

    going back home

union debate: This house fears the Indian tiger more than the Chinese dragon

I had been looking forward to this debate for a term and tonight it turned out to be disappointing, and upsetting.

There was no real debate between the two sides, despite the presence of some real prominent political figures who would be able to give powerful insights, well, if they chose to.

The first speaker from the proposition was High Commissioner of India in the UK. Being exceedingly diplomatic, he warmly praised the close tie between India and Oxford University (e.g. Manmohan Singh did his doctorate in Nuffield College), very briefly commented on the rapid development in India, and then reached the (surprising) conclusion that we should fear either India or China. His concluding sentence was "the relation between India and China has never been better". Well, what he said might be the truth, nonetheless it was irrelevant to the motion of debate and did not provide any insightful information.

The first speaker from the opposition was equally disappointing, if not more. He is the vice-president of the European Parlianment. He did not try to conceal his what I would call "ill preparation" and attributed that to the resignation of his Indian-origin assistant|||

The rest four of the speakers were more informative. What was the most unusual senario considering it was a debate was that the two sides basically agreed with each other! This was because of the difference in interpretating the motion.

There are two reasons to fear a country: either it is going to become a dominant player in the world economy and politics; or it is going to be a threat (economically, politically, militarily) to other countries. The proposition took the first interpretation while the opposition took the second.

The result was that both sides agreed that India is going to be an opportunity and China a threat.

    Why?

"Because India is the world's most populous DEMOCRACY and China, on the other hand, is controlled by the autocratic/totalitarian COMMUNIST regime."

"In a recent business survey, 80% of the investers would choose to put their money in India if they could because it is DEMOCRATIC."

"The US treats India as a natural alliance whereas China a strategic competitor."

"The Chinese economy is going to crack down when the country tries to move to a more democratic political system, just as what happened in the USSR in late 1980s."

After thirty years of struggling for economic development and finally having achieved something worth being proud of, we are seen a threat.

Providing cheap labour for the world to exploit, opening up a market comprising one fifth of the world population, holding on to billions of US dollar that keeps the world interest rate low, we are seen a threat.

Just because we are not democratic.

    "China is moving towards isolation."

Well facilitated airports, superb highways, easily available broadband access, etc, all are worthless, simply because one can't access Google.

It is an unforgivable sin that your citizens have no right to vote, even though they may vote for the wrong people. You really can't blame Palestinians. They have the right to vote Hamas in!

It is a shameful crime that there is no freedom of speech. With that, your citizens can express their political views freely, criticising every move of the government without knowing what they want it to do; they can say whatever they want, but bear in mind that you may need to train more lawyers just in case they are caught in trouble.

In a social group, the odd one is isolated; in this world, the odd one is seen a threat.
